With so much music being created in the world, Riding the Wave stands apart for its beautifully complex yet relatable instrumental arrangements. Joe is able to simultaneously play melodies, harmonies, bass lines, and occasional percussion in a way that sounds like several musicians playing together. Although difficult to categorize, the album combines elements of folk, blues, classical, jazz, and popular music. The majority of the tracks feature the guitar, but there are also several tracks featuring the ukulele and one track featuring the piano. Written and recorded at the foot of Diamond Head, Riding the Wave inspires listeners to hold on for a journey through every color of the sonic spectrum.
